Interview
October 2006
10"
Maria, very original name. How did you come up with it?
Our
first guitarist was given a real Ten Inch Maria doll for Christmas,
and we liked the name and the symbolism so we changed it to
10 MARIA
Who
are the band members, and who does what?
Mona Febonio (aka Nemo X-), Bass
Fawn
Li Vocals
Peg
Hines Drums
RC
Hernandez Guitar/Vocals
How
long has 10" Maria been together? Have you changed members?
10
years, yes we have grown and evolved. Mona started the band,
Fawn came in next, Peg was third, and RC completed the best
line up weve ever had.
How
many CDs have been released?
Weve
been on countless compilations such as: GoOnGirls, Music of
Texas, Punk Rodeo and more. Our last two CDs are: The
Pink Project, and the most recent, All Girl All the Time
Who
writes the lyrics, primarily? Do the ideas come from anywhere
specific?
Fawn writes most of them, sometimes the band puts in 2 cents
now and again, but mostly the lyrics come out of Fawns
brain.
What
is one of your favorite places to play out?
Emos,
RedRum, etc. downtown mostly, but we love playing anywhere there
is a GOOD sound person.
Do
you have any specific odd experiences from one of your shows
that you could share?
The time this guy kept on trying to grab Mona or her bass in
the middle of the show, so she rammed her head stock right into
his belly from the stage. It was a riot, and he stopped it.
Who
do your fans say the band sounds most like?
We get a lot of different input for many people, its so varied
from Patti Smith, to AC/DC to Jeff Buckley, hell it is just
pretty cool so many people dig the sound.
What
kind of music do you tell others you play?
Rock,
Hard Rock, Indie, Punk Pop, to Alternative
Are
you looking to possibly sign onto a major label someday?
Sure
someday, it would have to be something we felt good about doing,
as it is hard not to get sucked into the MACHINE.
What's
one of the most exciting things that has happened to you in
the music business?
The
first time we heard ourselves on the radio, it was 101-X, and
after I song was finished, Metallica and GooGoo Dolls played
right after us.
What
was the main reason you wanted to start playing music?
Because
when it is in you there is nothing else you can do. If
you dont play, you fee like there is something missing
in your soul.
What's
the main goal for 10" Maria in terms of ultimate success-
how would you define success?
Fulfillment
artistically, to play the music we love, to grow as musicians
and share our music with people who need it. We are an Indie
band also, so we would really dig a movie sound track on a really
good film, like Pulp Fiction or something.
Do
you have a way to make each live show different? Do you ever
play acoustic live shows?
Every show is different because we play off the crowd, the crowd
is always different.
What
is your take on the MP3 craze as far as ability to download
free music?
People
should share their music. When we make money, it is great, but
we all believe in Karma Baby, Karma
What
are your all-time favorite recordings?
Led Zepplin all of them, Jeff Buckley, this is a hard question
Summer Cannibals by Patti Smith
Do
you play any covers at your shows?
Yeah, Plump by Hole and Rebel Yell by Billy Idol
Were
any of you in other bands before 10" Maria?
RC
was in BitchCat in NY, Peg was in W.O.D, Mona only 10
MARIA, and Fawn some rockabilly band in Seattle called Hell
something.
How
did everyone meet?
By
the Grace of God!
If
you weren't doing music, what else would you want to put focus
on career-wise?
Are
you crazy
Music, Music, Musica!
